“Bright Spots in the Midst of a Pandemic
The pandemic has undoubtedly taken a toll on many of us. But it is also during a time like this that we witness the resilience of society – communities banding together for the common good, to preserve what is treasured, to care for the more vulnerable among us through selfless acts of kindness and generosity. I would like to share three bright spots we perceived that demonstrated the solidarity and resilience of our SUSS community of students, alumni, staff, and benefactors.
First, you answered our call for help. From April 2020 to March 2021, 751 full- and part-time students received just-in-time financial support, totalling $969,000, from the SUSS Student Care Fund. We could not have done it without you. Your thoughtfulness and kindness towards our students ensured that they had a safety net when the going got tough, and tangibly showed that they were not alone in their struggles.
Second, we saw an increase in student participation in the pay-it-forward movement at SUSS. Led by seven students from the graduating cohort, the Class Giving 2020 campaign raised an initial amount of $16,955, a large portion of which came from fellow graduates.
Third, SUSS conferred degrees on our first batch of 11 graduates from the Juris Doctor programme at Convocation 2020.
